The full hydraulic tamping drive makes rotating parts like eccentric shaft, roller bearings, piston rods, hydraulic motor, fly wheel and tamping flaps obsolete. Additionally, the tamping drive only vibrates during insertion and compaction of the ballast – the rest of the tamping cycle it stands still.
SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION OF NOISE AND DUST
As the tamping drive only vibrates during penetration and compaction a reduction of continuous noise emission more than 7 dBA and a reduction of respirable dust emission of more than 50% is achieved. The full hydraulic tamping drive is a game changer in today railway industry.
INTELLIGENT PENETRATION ASSISTANT
During insertion into the ballast the amplitude and frequency of the tamping drive are variable and electronically controlled. This function was developed for hard ballast bed conditions to reduce the penetration force and related material stress of the tamping machine.
S7 AUTOMATIC TAMPING FOR OPTIMUM COMPACTION
The hydraulic squeezing cylinders are equipped with integrated position sensors and pressure transducers which individually stop squeezing in S7 automatic tamping mode as soon as the optimum compaction force is reached. The optimum compaction of ballast reduces the track geometry deterioration rate.
BALLAST BED ANALYSIS WITH SYSTEM7 INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT WEB PLATFORM "INFRAME"
Each individual tamping drive is controlled independently and records the data of the achieved ballast compaction, the ballast bed hardness as well as the squeezing path. The quality number of the ballast bed is derived from this. Tamping data is uploaded to the web platform “INFRAME” were the tamping job is visible on a map with related GPS coordinates and an image of each sleeper surrounding.

The tamping drive conversion kit is available for most conventional tamping banks and offers the advantages of a full hydraulic tamping bank incl. S7 automatic tamping mode and ballast bed analysis.
The following video shows an example of the System7 conversion kit, that has been fitted into a tamping machine of Plasser & Theurer.
A TROUBLE-FREE INSTALLATION
During the conversion, the rotating eccentric drive is removed and replaced by the full hydraulic tamping drive. After adaptation of the hydraulic supply the provided electronic control system gets installed.
