OPTICAL MEASURING SYSTEM

S7 OMS

CONTACTLESS. PRECISE. MAINTENANCE-FREE.

The OMS optical measurement system from system7 redefines the standard for modern track alignment measurement. It combines the highest measurement accuracy with maximum reliability and makes a decisive contribution to improved quality, process reliability, and reduced lifecycle costs for modern tamping machines—regardless of the manufacturer.

With digital camera technology, high-performance LEDs, and intelligent self-monitoring, OMS replaces all conventional steel cable, pendulum, and leveling systems—for maximum accuracy, reliability, and efficiency in the tamping process.

The system is fully integrated into system7 tamping machines, but can also be retrofitted into vehicles from other manufacturers, bringing their measurement technology up to the latest standards of digital precision.

FUNCTION AND TECHNOLOGY

The OMS determines the current track position during the tamping process and continuously measures:

  • Longitudinal level
  • Alignment (crown height)
  • Crown at the front, middle, and rear measuring cars

At the heart of the system are two digital industrial cameras on the middle measuring car, which capture the patterns emitted by the LED light pattern transmitters at high frequency (up to 50 frames per second).

From this image data, the OMS computer calculates all relevant geometric values and transmits them directly to the machine control system for precise control of the lifting and straightening unit.

ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS

The OMS optical measuring system completely replaces the mechanical components of conventional measuring systems—such as steel wires, tensioning devices, and physical pendulums. This eliminates sources of error such as sag, wire breakage, temperature effects, or vibrations caused by the plugging units.

The result: greater measurement precision, reduced maintenance requirements, and maximum machine availability.

Additional benefits:

  • No time-consuming calibration or adjustment work
  • No vibration or centrifugal errors during sheet travel
  • Self-monitoring system with automatic error detection
  • Precise camber measurement via vibration-decoupled sensors
  • Significantly reduced downtime and maintenance costs

SELF-MONITORING AND OPERATIONAL SAFETY

The OMS operates in a fault-tolerant and self-monitoring manner.

It automatically detects the status of all components—from image recognition to signal transmission—and notifies the operator of any deviations via the machine control system.

A multi-level status display (ranging from “active” to “Warning – poor image quality”) ensures that the operator is always informed about the system’s operational status.

Thanks to this intelligent diagnostic logic, the OMS remains fully functional even during temporary malfunctions and ensures consistently precise measurement results.

ROBUST CONSTRUCTION AND EASY INTEGRATION

All optical components are housed in robust aluminum enclosures, protected against dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. The system operates reliably under a wide range of weather conditions.

Thanks to standardized interfaces, the OMS can be integrated into both new system7 machines and existing vehicles from other manufacturers—as a cost-effective retrofit solution with modern PLC connectivity.

LOW-MAINTENANCE AND DURABLE

The OMS is designed to last for the entire service life of the machine and operates maintenance-free under normal conditions.

Only occasional visual inspections of the protective screens are required.

An automatic calibration function ensures consistently accurate measurement results

– even after individual components have been replaced.
